A mammoth metropolis on the west coast of Canada, Vancouver is a diverse, multicultural and attractive city. Towering buildings, a mountainous backdrop, cosmopolitan style and plenty to see and do makes it a very alluring city to visit. Couple this with the natural beauty that lies just on the outskirts and you can’t go wrong. As with any city holiday, costs can quickly add up. Grouse Grind Hike

Embrace the beautiful great outdoors and tackle the Grouse Grind Hike. This is undoubtedly the most popular trail in the area which winds up the face of the Grouse Mountain. It can be a hard slog depending on your fitness level. It is completely free and the views from the top are worth a million dollars.

Christchurch Cathedral

Christchurch Cathedral is easily found due to its location directly opposite Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in the heart of the city centre. It’s an Anglican church built in Gothic Revival style and dates to 1888. The interior comprises beautiful arches and colourful stained glass windows, with a Class A Heritage site classification.

Art Galleries

As with all large cities, there is a thriving art scene and a number of art galleries that you can visit for free. Showcasing a wide variety of artists and styles, stop by at Vancouver Art Gallery after 5pm on Tuesdays for admission by donation. Alternatively, visit Contemporary Art Gallery Tuesdays to Sundays between 12 – 6pm for free entry.

University of British Columbia

Universities tend to be large and often grand buildings. The University of British Columbia is no different. If you have an interest in architecture, you can explore the campus, said to be one of the most attractive in the country, for free.

Stanley Park, Vancouver

One of Vancouver’s most admired places, Stanley Park is a joy to visit. It is considered to be one of the best city parks in the world, comparable with Hyde Park in London and Central Park in New York. Have a game on the free tennis courts, picnic on the grass, walk among the trees or along the sea wall.

Lynn Canyon Park lies just on the outskirts of North Vancouver. It’s a firm favourite among locals and visitors alike. Spend an afternoon on one of the several trails on offer in the park or just pick a nice spot and relax. Take a dip at one of the swimming holes and watch the waterfalls. Be sure also to brave the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge.
