Huge ski domains to explore, modern high speed lift systems and charming and authentic ski resorts boasting excellent facilities both on and off-piste are just a few of the reasons why skiing in the French Alps offers some of the best skiing in the world.

The long history of skiing in France has enabled the growth of some of the largest ski domains in the world – Les Trois Vallees, Espace Killy, Paradiski and Les Portes du Soleil to name a few of the most famous. Take a week’s ski holiday in one of these areas and you’ll be hard-pressed to explore the whole area during your stay. You should easily be able to have whole days out on the slopes without having to ski the same piste twice. There are too many other ski areas in France to mention, usually offering slightly cheaper lift passes and fewer queues but still providing a top quality ski experience.

The high investment in French skiing means you’ll often find the latest high speed lift systems to transport you up the mountain, plus comprehensive snow cannon coverage to ensure that if nature doesn’t provide enough of the white stuff you’ll still be able to have a fun ski holiday.

It’s not just the sheer number and scale of the ski lifts that make the French Alps a winter holiday hot spot it’s also the quality of the offering off the slopes. A vast number of ski resorts ranging from picturesque & traditional villages to high altitude purpose built resorts, most offering great facilities off the mountain to compliment the skiing, like hot spas and well-being centres to relax after a busy day. Plus you’ll find many other activities to try like snowmobiling, dog sledding, night skiing, ice skating, tandem paragliding, snow shoeing. The larger resorts will often host spectator events to add to your holiday experience whether that is ski competitions / spectacles, music events or expos of local traditions.

Of course France is famous for its cuisine and a ski holiday is the perfect opportunity to sample some, whether that be on the slopes from one of the numerous mountain restaurants which provide great food with some of the most stunning views from their terraces, or later in the day at one of the many restaurants in the resort.

Nightlife varies between resorts with the smaller more family friendly resorts probably offering a few quiet bars, whereas places like Chamonix or Val d’Isère boast enough bars & nightclubs to keep the most dedicated of hedonists happy.

It depends on what your priorities are when planning your trip but you’ll be able find exactly what you need in France. Whether you’re looking for a massive ski area, a family friendly holiday, an off-piste adventure playground, beautiful picture postcard ski resort, late night après opportunities or simply a short transfer from an airport for a sneaky weekend break, there are numerous resorts that can fulfil any combination of these criteria.
