Although described as the most Spanish of Spain’s cities, the capital of the country, Madrid, does not seem to be popular as other capital cities around the world. Art and Architecture
Whilst there is no pinnacle monument or iconic building, no Leaning Tower of Pisa or Eiffel Tower to photograph yourself next to, the general architecture to be found across the city is alluring and undeniable beautiful.
The City Hall, Palacio de Cibeles, will fool you into thinking it is a place of worship. Elaborately grand and built in neo-classical style, it sits proudly in Sibele Square surrounded by marble sculptures and fountains. Palacio Real, the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family dating back to the 18th century is another building that simply drips with grandeur and beauty. Partially open to the public, visitors can gaze in awe at the fantastic art and furnishings within, as well as the throne room and private apartments. And these are just for starters; the various squares, the main street Gran Via, Puerta de Alcaláare Bridge plus Madrid Cathedral are all an architectural feast for the eyes amongst plenty more. There is also a wide selection of appraised art museums that should not slip under your radar such as Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen museums, not forgetting the Caixo Forum. Entertainment
Friendly locals who love to socialise can only mean one thing; Madrid is definitely the place to party ‘til dawn….literally! Boasting an unstoppable and energetic nightlife, many locals don’t turn in until between 5-7am! Thought to have one of the highest numbers of bars per capita of any European city, the choice is endless and it’s worth taking this into account when choosing your accommodation. La Latina district with its trendy bars and tasty tapas is a great place to start the night, as is Ciudad Universitaria. Gran Via on the other hand is the daddy; a street that is home to many major nightclubs but with opening hours usually between 1am -7am, this is the place to end your night, not start it.
Enjoy some Flamenco
Madrid is also home to some of the best Flamenco dancers in Spain so be sure to visit a flamenco restaurant or two during your time here for an unforgettable night out! Corral de la Moreria is widely regarded as the premier place to go. Controversial as it may be, bullfighting is also very popular here so you may choose to enjoy a truly authentic evening. Whether you actually decide to watch a fight or not, the impressive main ring Las Ventas is worth a look. Why not also consider the numerous concert venues and opera houses on offer.
In short, Madrid offers an eclectic insight into the city living side of Spain.
