Boasting an exquisite coastline, mysterious caves and ancient history shrouded in myths and legends, with the brilliantly blue Mediterranean Sea lapping on its shores, the stunning Greek Island of Crete is visited by thousands each year. If you are planning a visit to this wondrous isle, check out our selection of 8 things to do to make sure you get the best from your time here.

  • Highly regarded for its fantastic beaches, one or two beach days are a quintessential part of a holiday on Crete. Each is comprised of warm crystal clear waters that wave hello to the spanning sands, yet each has a unique charm. Secluded or busy, take your pick and sunbake, swim, snorkel and frolic. Red beach with its impressive cliffs and Elafonissi beach boasting white sandbars and protected waters are top picks.
  • The beautiful beaches are complimented by the mountainous backdrops which hold a certain allure. Give in to your curiosity and head off to explore the mountains! Hidden caves are a source of mystery and the traditional villages take you back in history to simpler times. Walk or cycle your way along some of the best trails, such as those around Mount Ida, the largest mountain on the island or tackle the Samaria Gorge Trail, the longest gorge in Europe, in the heart of the stunning Samaria Gorge National Park.
  • Go shopping for authentic produce and unique souvenirs. Pick up some local delicious Cretan honey, leather goods, hand-made wooden items and jewellery made from bronze and copper. Frequent some of the local markets and street stalls and wander around the local villages like Kritsa and Anogia for a traditional shopping experience.
  • Visit the Arkadi Monastery, one of the most important cultural centres on the island. Although having endured a somewhat turbulent history, this 16th century renaissance style church surrounded by rolling hills is a top sight to visit.
  • Spend some time learning about the history and culture of Crete with a visit to one of the several museums dotted across the island. Covering all types of topics from archaeology through to art, there is sure to be a museum to suit everyone’s interests. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is highly regarded.
  • Get an insight into Ancient Greece with a visit to some of the many ruins that litter the island. Each of the ruins are unique, some of regular villages like those in Gournia. Others, like Gortys, are of Greco-Roman cities where as ruins of Minoan cities, like Knossos and Phaistos, can also be seen.
  • Visit Dikteon Cave, said to be the birthplace of Zeus. Idaion Cave also claims this title but whichever you believe is the true birthplace of the Greek God, both of these caves are impressive natural wonders and certainly worth a visit. There are almost 3,000 caves in total across Crete but these are by far the most famous.
  • Explore the delights of the largest city on the island, Heraklion. Having wandered the streets, head to the outskirts to the must see attraction, the Palace of Knossos which legend dictates is the home of mythical Minotaur of King Minos. Beautiful frescoes and huge columns dominate the building which was excellently restored by the famous archaeologist Arthur Evans in the early 1900s.
  • With plenty to see and enjoy, and a beautiful selection of Apartments in Corfu to make you feel at home, you are sure to have an excellent holiday on this idyllic Greek Island.
