Having just launched car hire in Serbia we thought we would spread a little love for this lesser known gem. It doesn’t feature on many top 10 holiday destinations lists, but Serbia is the perfect solution for a European excursion off the beaten tourist track.
A bit of background
The country is found in south-east Europe, slap bang in the middle of Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. This means that Serbia is of course landlocked. This fascinating country doesn’t need a beach to offer tons of appeal.
Climate in Serbia
When it comes to the weather, snow of course plays a big part and this is undeniable. Serbia can satisfy you whatever time of the year you visit. In winter, you definitely need to wrap up warm. The country transforms into a winter wonderland offering delicious warming goods and wintertime activities. The summer months are nonetheless appealing with fantastic sunsets and a great vibe.
Explore Belgrade
The capital of Belgrade is naturally the focal point for the majority of visitors. It’s one of the largest cities in south-east Europe, with a history which dates back to the 4th century. Described as an energetic city that is gradually increasing as a culture hotspot, a visit to Belgrade is worthy of your time. A primary must see for any visitor is Republic Square. Bustling with activity, it’s a good focal point and you will also find the National Museum and the National Theatre here. It also leads directly onto the main busy pedestrian street in the city, Knez Mihailova Street which offers plenty of shops and restaurants. Another hub for activity is Skadarlija Street, with a cobbled road and an Old Town atmosphere where evening diners are serenaded by live bands which play old Belgrade music.
Highlights of the city
Belgrade Fortress is one of the highlights on the city. The majority of the complex is parkland, boasting fabulous views across the city. You will also find several cafés, tennis and basketball courts, museums and an observatory within the fortress walls. Those with an interest in historical and religious buildings will rejoice in the selection of impressive churches and monasteries to visit. One of the most visibly impressive and important is undoubtedly the St Sava Church. It is reportedly the largest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world. There is loads to see and do all over the city. Numerous shopping malls, historic mansions, Belgrade Zoo, morning markets, the Cathedral, Museums and Galleries, numerous seasonal activities such as ice skating and more. You can’t really go wrong with a visit to Belgrade.
Beyond Belgrade
What about the rest of the country though? A visit to any country shouldn’t end in the capital. To really experience it you have to get out there and explore a little more. The countryside is beautiful and there are several stunning parks to be enjoyed. Djerdap National Park is considered one of the most stunning national parks in Europe. Yet many people have never heard of it. It borders Romania in the north east of the country and contains a large number of Roman settlements, brilliantly combining history with nature. Head off and explore these as well as the three gorges, three valleys and two canyons.
Kopaonik National Park is found in central Serbia amidst the highest part of the mountain range and is thus home to the best known ski resort in the country. In addition to the ski resorts, the national park boasts a varied and complex array of flora and fauna. For something on a lower altitude, a visit to Fruska Gora National Park is recommended. You will find gentle slopes, vineyards and rich fauna and flora, including 20 different species of orchids. There are also several monasteries within the grounds dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
It’s impossible for us to cover everything that Serbia has to offer but we hope that this insight has got your taste buds tingling for this somewhat underappreciated country.
