The Lazio road trip will take you through some of the most beautiful and quaint hidden gems of Italy. Drive your rental car around the Sabina foothills and visit the overlooked countryside that resides just outside of Rome.

Although taking the train from Rome to Terni will get you there the quickest, it will take away opportunities to explore the Italian countryside on the way. Driving from Rome to Terni only takes around an hour and a half, however, we recommend you check out some of these unmissable detours. Struggling between choosing public transport or car hire? Read our blog on why you should hire a car in Italy.

Rome

You’ll be starting off in the capital city of Rome! Before shooting off for your Lazio road trip, have you made sure to get the best of what Rome has to offer? Anyone visiting Rome should pencil in a visit to the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Trevi fountain, and the Vatican.

Villa Gregoriana

This 19th century complex of parks, waterfalls, wildlife and grottoes located in Tivoli is a marvellous spectacle. The Villa Gregoriana fell into ruin by the end of the 20th century but was recovered and reopened  in 2005 by the National Trust of Italy. You can cover the Villa Gregoriana in around 1 to 2 hours and you’ll get the experience on a sunny day.

The Sabina Hills

The Sabina hills just south of Rieti are beautiful rolling hilltops with several centuries old hilltop towns perched on top of them. The most notable towns to visit are Fara Sabina and Farfa. However, we recommend you drive your rental car up to Fara Sabina for its breath-taking viewpoints over the valleys of Lazio.

Rieti

Rieti is a commune that sits at the bottom of the Sabine mountains on a small hilltop. Underneath the historic streets and shops lies underground structures built by the romans. Walk the quaint streets of Rieti or journey into the ancient depths below. Rieti is considered an important town in Italy and even hosted the Grand Prix for a number of years.

Monte Terminillo

The 2217 metre high mountain isn’t just an attraction for climbers and thrill seekers. There are plenty of activities to do around the mountain such as an adventure park, trekking, Nordic walking and even cross country skiing in winter. We recommend driving your hire car to Monte Terminillo to observe some of the most spectacular peaks in the Apennine Mountains.

Marmore Falls

The Marmore waterfalls will be your last stop on the way to Terni. Despite seeming like a wonder created by nature, the Marmore waterfalls are actually man made. The artificial waterfalls were created by the Romans to reroute stagnant waters into the river Nera which runs beneath the cliff face.

Terni

You’ve arrived in the city of Terni! This historic location nicknamed the “city of lovers” is perfect for sightseers who love beautiful old Italian architecture but want to avoid the crowds. Here you can kick back and relax after your lengthy road trip through Lazio. Still got an appetite for road trips in Italy? Check out our blog on taking the Amalfi coast scenic drive.
