Forgetting to check the car rental conditions
Always remember to thoroughly check your booking quote and rental conditions before confirmation. At Zest we have no hidden costs, all the information and additional costs are advertised within the booking quote.
Not having a credit card for the security deposit
A credit card in the main driver’s name will be needed upon the collection of the vehicle to authorise a security deposit. A credit card is needed for the security of the provider to prove you’re not a credit risk and to ensure the safe return of the vehicle. The security deposit will be held but the money will NOT leave whilst the rental is in place. The amount can vary based on the type of vehicle you’re booking; most are between £500 and £1000.
Most car rental companies do not accept pre-paid credit cards, AMEX cards or debit cards. Customers will also be required to enter the PIN number for their credit card when the security deposit is authorised. If you DON’T have a credit card, some providers offer you to leave a deposit on a debit card or have no security deposit whatsoever (check first before booking). For more details on security deposits, head over to our blog on security deposits explained.
Forgetting to bring documentation
Don’t forget your documentation! If you forget your documentation the vehicle may be refused to you and money not refunded. You will need to present a form of ID (passport or driving license) with up-to-date details. In some cases, you will need proof of address. Always ensure you meet the requirements stated within the rental terms and conditions before you confirm your booking.
Accepting the insurance hard sell
This is a common mistake many fall for and end up wasting money on unneeded extras! With minor exceptions, any extras you are offered at the front desk are allowed to be declined. Just say no if you think they aren’t needed. Some less reputable providers we refuse to work with can be very pushy when selling extra insurance. If you’ve made a booking with Zest and you feel like they’re being too pushy, get in touch immediately and we will assist you and even speak to the provider if needed.
Not inspecting the vehicle upon collection
Always remember to inspect your vehicle and take pictures of any pre-existing damages. This protects you if the damages aren’t documented and they attempt to charge you for the repairs. Less reputable car rental companies have been known to try and charge customers for damages that were already there!
Furthermore, take a quick photo of the fuel gauge before driving off for reference on return. In line with the fair fuel policy, you will need to return the car with the same amount of fuel in it otherwise you may be charged. For information on collection, read our blog on what to expect when collecting your hire car.
Pickup and return times
If you pick up early or return late you may be charged. Make sure to leave on time to make sure you’re not late. If you’re late from delays or traffic, give your rental car provider a call to let them know. Although there is no guarantee, it gives you the best chance to not receive an extra charge. Our guide on what to expect when returning your hire car goes into more detail on the subject.
If you’re expecting to pick up or return the vehicle after the supplier’s office is closed, you can opt for the out-of-hours service for an additional fee. This fee varies between companies and will be displayed in the “mandatory local charges” section on your quote if applicable.
FAQs
Does my age affect my rental cost?
- Yes. Drivers under the age of twenty-five will likely have to pay slightly extra for their age. Some providers will allow rental with no additional costs, but others may not allow under twenty-fives full stop! Enter your age into the booking search form before looking for quotes.
Are there any ‘rent now, pay later’ car rental services?
- Zest car Rental offers a Book Now Pay Later scheme which allows you to pay a small amount up front to confirm your booking. The remaining amount will be paid two weeks before the rental!
Should I buy insurance from the car rental provider?
- The insurance offered by car rental providers is expensive compared to the additional insurance offered by brokers like us. However, paying for the providers insurance can revoke the need to pay a security deposit.
- The Zest top-up insurance provides cheaper reimbursement coverage against any loss or damage to the vehicle that isn’t covered by the standard insurance.
Should I worry about mileage?
- Most bookings made through Zest come with unlimited mileage so you shouldn’t have to worry. Rentals that are 25 days or more are subject to a fair usage policy (contact us for more details if you’re renting a car for 25 days or more).
