Let’s face it, we didn’t really have much of a 2020 summer travel season. Many couldn’t get away due to restrictions at home and abroad and that’s just not right. 2021 looks to change that, a bounce back for sure. We all deserve a break after a year we’ll remember for all the wrong reasons.
Vaccine programmes give hope
Whilst the UK is leading the vaccination programme race, many popular travel destinations are pushing forward to give us travellers a ray of hope to return this year. Malta for instance, has vaccinated almost 12% of their population so far, with most other destinations at 6% and rising fast as they race to kick off the 2021 tourism season.
With vaccinations ramping up for most countries, it is likely we’ll see some kind of ‘Vaccine Passport’ for travellers to easily prove they’ve been vaccinated in order to enter a country. Bahrain has been one of the first to introduce these and we think it’s a great initiative.
Our top picks for 2021
We believe the safest locations to travel to this year will be the islands and regions that don’t have land borders for Coronavirus to easily enter. They tend to have smaller populations and can therefore vaccinate residents much quicker than their mainland counterparts but that doesn’t mean that the mainland areas aren’t safe. There are so many measures throughout Europe and beyond to help stem the spread that we believe pretty much everywhere is safe, here are our top picks.
Malta
Why Malta is safe: Having one of the highest vaccination rates in Europe puts Malta firmly in the driving seat for accepting tourists again this year.

Where do we start with Malta? A tiny island sitting between Italy and the North Africa in the Mediterranean Sea. Malta may be small but that doesn’t mean it’s not packed with character, various invaders over the years means this island has a diverse culture and rich history. Being only 246 square kilometres in area means hiring a car is the perfect way to get around, expect azure seas and some fantastic medieval architecture.
Malta is also planning to pay tourists up to 200 Euros to holiday on the island in 2021. There are a couple of caveats of course, and it’s based on the star rating for your accommodation. However, getting paid to visit this stunning gem? That has to be a reason to get that flight booked ASAP!
Cyprus
Why Cyprus is safe: Strict lockdowns have helped Cyprus keep the virus under control. With no land borders it has been easier to keep the virus out.
Cyprus travel info: www.visitcyprus.com
Cyprus has long been a favourite holiday destination for Brits and it’s so easy to see why; warm all year round, friendly locals and great food. The town of Paphos, combines new with old, a great waterfront area with lots of restaurants and water sports alongside the ancient Paphos castle and Byzantine fortress. There’s always plenty to see and do, plus hiring a car in Cyprus is easy for Brits too as you drive on the left, the same as the UK.
Balearic Islands
Why the Balearics are safe: Like the rest of Spain, the Balearics were locked down early. Whilst it has a lower case rate than the mainland, it is higher than the Canaries due to its easier access from the mainland.
Balearics travel info: www.illesbalears.travel
This little collection of Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera aren’t all party central like some are made out to be. Sure, there are parts of Mallorca and Ibiza that are renowned for this but dig a little deeper and you’ll discover hidden coves, beautiful orange groves and unique island cuisine. Hire a car to make the most of it and you won’t regret visiting these Spanish gems.
Canary Islands
Why the Canaries are safe: Like the Balearics, the Canaries locked down early. Their case rate is very low thanks to being reasonably isolated in the Atlantic Ocean.

Famed for their winter sun, the Canary Islands sit off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. These volcanic islands have a deep history and are popular with those wanting to get some sunshine and heat during the October and March when it’s a little chilly back home. In fact, at the time of writing it’s 20 degrees, if that’s not enough to pique your interest, we don’t know what is!
Madeira, Portugal
Why Madeira is safe: Measures were introduced very early in the pandemic so Madeira has kept an very low level of infection and remains one of the safest places in the world.

Also known for favourable temperatures in winter is Madeira. Although not quite as warm as the Canary Islands, this Atlantic island is arguably much prettier. Lush greenery covers most of Madeira, with dramatic coastlines you’ll be in awe of it. It’s also easy to explore by car, a trip around the island will only take 3.5 hours, why not take it steady and spend a week exploring?
Greece
Why Greece is safe: Greece entered a lockdown very early in the pandemic which paid off. You can enter without restrictions if you can prove you’ve had a COVID vaccine.
Greece travel info: www.visitgreece.gr
Full of ancient history and the birthplace of the Olympics, Greece is a destination you won’t forgot in a hurry. There’s a distinct vibe from the locals that makes you feel welcome and at home. Not to mention the idyllic islands that dot the Med, you’re spoilt for choice when choosing Greece. A few days visiting ancient sites suit you? Hitting the lively bars for a couple of nights? What about relaxing on a sandy beach, cocktail in hand? Greece really does have it all.
The Algarve, Portugal
Why the Algarve is safe: Whilst the north of Portugal has seen many cases of COVID-19, the less densely populated area of the Algarve has fared well with a low case rate.
Algarve travel info: www.visitportugal.com
We couldn’t put together a list like this without including the Algarve could we? The laid-back atmosphere and warm welcome you get in this region is hard to beat. Faro, the region’s main city is full of quirky restaurants and cafes. Head out to the countryside and you’ll find some great golf courses, beaches and coastal walks, plus we hear the weather isn’t bad either. Hiring a car in the Algarve is by far the easiest way to explore and with over 150km of coastline to feast your eyes on, those walking boots just won’t cut it.
