The Canary Islands play host to a variety of locations that have something for everyone. From water sports to shopping and sight-seeing to sunny beaches, they’re idyllic all year round. Whatever you decide to do, escape here during the winter months for a burst of sun. Read our guide to the Canary Islands and what they each have to offer.

Fuerteventura

Since the first tourist hotel was built in 1965, Fuerteventura has been an ideal location to visit in the cooler months of the year. Commonly referred to as ‘the island of eternal spring’, it has average high temperatures of 22°C, even in mid-November and December. Travelling at this time of year means you can avoid the busiest time, which only adds to the list of reasons to go.

If you feel like upping the pace a little, explore the now dormant volcanic mountains, such as the Montaña de Tindaya in a 4×4 and really take in the landscape. Take a hike through the attractive hills and surroundings to burn a few extra calories. Something that is sure to interest everyone is the Cuevo De Llanos. This cave is approximately one million years old. It’s also the only one across Fuerteventura that can house wildlife. It is actually a pipe that formed when the top of a pool of lava solidified and the centre slowly escaped, which is fascinating to think of when you’re stood inside.

Once you’ve explored the land, why not dive into something refreshing and indulge in a variety of water sports. From surfing to scuba diving, there’s something to suit everyone. There are around 12 dive centres to choose from including Abyss Divers in Corralejo, which are perfect everyone from beginners to the more advanced. Take a boat trip and marvel at the array of wildlife, maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of the dolphins and turtles that call these shores home. If you’re feeling exhausted, why not just take the time to relax on one of the northern beaches. Our favourites include the Corralejo Grandes Playas and Lobos Island.

Tenerife

A popular destination for all ages, Tenerife really does cater for all interests.
With a wide range of shopping centres, golf courses, zoos and water parks, everyone will find something to fill their days with. Why not commence your holiday with a trip to Teide National Park, a truly beautiful landscape to immerse yourself in. At this time of year, it’s warm enough to wander around in light clothing. You won’t boil after 10 minutes, so it really is perfect for enjoying the outdoors. With its breath-taking views, it’s no wonder scenes from several movies have been filmed here. Visit a market and snap up some local delicacies for a picnic, or work up an appetite and enjoy a meal out at one of the fabulous local restaurants.

If sight-seeing is high on your agenda then don’t just stop at the national parks. Tenerife is packed full of monuments and fascinating sights that really can’t be missed, such as the Cathedral of La Laguna or La Plaza de España in Santa Cruz. At the end of your holiday, why not head to Puerto de la Cruz. It’s maintained its old-town charm but cleverly combines it with a cosmopolitan twist. Frequent plenty of boutique shops and restaurants, and you’ll end your break on a high.

Lanzarote

Journey to Cueva de los Verdes during your stay and marvel at this mesmerising natural phenomenon. Visitors can now enjoy wandering along a 2km long path. The stunning Timanfaya National Park will also provide you with some amazing sights. Many describe the area as being lunar in appearance. Stroll across a whole area made of lava! A trip to the onsite restaurant named El Diablo will result in a gorgeous meal cooked on a volcano, certainly a little different. Hop in your hire car in the Canaries and travel to the Mirador del Rio, a marvellous lookout point. You can enjoy spectacular views over the island of La Graciosa among others and spend a relaxing afternoon here.

Whichever island you choose to visit, you should not be disappointed. The time of year is perfect to ensure that you will truly get a tranquil relaxing getaway from it all holiday!
