There are many magical-looking locations around the world; some many of us have heard of and perhaps had the chance to visit. Others might have stayed completely off your radar. These locations below will have you feeling like you’ve stepped straight into a fairy-tale in a storybook.

Alhambra Palace, Spain
This “Red Castle” got its name from the red clay it’s made from. It’s the most visited location in Andalucía, with thousands every year visiting to check out the intricate details carved into the stone, the waterworks and the garden. The castle is strategically placed atop a hill and retains an incredible view of all its surroundings.
Hallerbos. Photo by: ronnybas/Adobe Stock
Hallerbos, Belgium
In springtime, this forest becomes completely carpeted by bluebells which gives the name “the blue forest”. Best visited between April and May when the flowers are likely to be in full bloom, pick up a walking map from Halle tourist office or download a copy. Meander the three different walks, weaving through tufts of bluebells. Although the forest has been around for many years, a lot of the trees were cut down during World War 2 so have been replanted. Four of the areas here are protected to help grow interesting wild flowers which have popped up, such as the wood purge and golden saxifrage.
Venice. Photo by: James/Adobe Stock
Venice, Italy
Known as one of the most romantic cities in the world, the cobbled streets and stunning architecture have inspired many incredible pieces of art so it’s not surprising it makes our list. This city is surrounded by water, and it’s complete shut off from cars. It’s the only pedestrian city in the world. The 118 little islands are separated by canals and linked by bridges. The fact there’s no honking horns or smog just adds to the fairy-tale appeal. Take a gondola or Vaporetto (water bus) along the Grand Canal as the sun sets for an unforgettable experience. Visit the many museums, art exhibitions, palaces and theatres for pure Venetian culture. Watch authentic local craftspeople making their speciality artisan products.
Quebec. Photo by: merrvas/Adobe Stock
Quebec, Canada
The Chateau Frontenac found here is perhaps the most photographed hotel in Canada. You’ll find it among other pretty examples of Canadian architecture, waterfalls, and stunning cathedrals. Visit La Citadelle, the fortress, and Montmorency Falls. The ramparts surrounding Old Quebec are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are the only fortified city walls remaining in the Americas north of Mexico. Between January to March, you can also spend a night in the only true ice hotel in North America, Hotel de Glace.

Prague, Czech Republic
A guaranteed entry on the list as it’s known as ‘the fairy-tale city’. With its recognition as the second most castle-dense country in Europe, you’ll find yourself exploring many places of past power. It’s home to the largest ancient castle, Prague Castle, a highlight. You’ll also find a church decorated with over 40,000 bones, Sedlec Ossuary. Charles Bridge, one of the best for photographs, is lined with statues as well as local artists and musicians, making it a magical place for a stroll. Even Walt Disney is said to have found a fairy-tale home in Prague; the Church of Our Lady before Týn is said to be the inspiration behind Sleeping Beauty’s castle. When visiting, you’ll find the beautiful Zodiac Astronomical Clock nearby. Indulge in tasty Czech cuisine in one of the many outdoor cafes.
Lake Bled. Photo by: Andrey Armyagov/Adobe Stock
Lake Bled, Slovenia
The lake is surrounded by pine covered mountains and contains a Gothic castle and church atop an island in the middle. The sight alone is awe-inspiring. It’s said that those who climb the 99 steps to the church and then to the top of the tower can make a wish. Ring the bell at the same time to guarantee that your wish will come true. Take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage led by traditional fijakers (coachmen). Out on the lake you can participate in various water sports or experience the traditional pletnas. Hike the surrounding area to experience forests, canyons and waterfalls.
Hallstatt. Photo by: Brosi Stroujko/Adobe Stock
Hallstatt, Austria
Get lost exploring local ice caves, row across the lake, discover the local salt mines. Tour the world’s first known salt mine, Salzwelten. See for yourself the stunning landscape that’s inspired painters, poets and photographers to produce incredible works. It’s so breath-taking that a housing project in China is building a full-scale replica. Although the houses are still under construction, the town square and church have been replicated. The town of pretty pastel houses set among mountains is popular with tourists, especially in the summer months. Take a relaxing walk along the lake front and capture the scene on camera to take home.
Pena Palace. Photo by: Brosi Stroujko/Adobe Stock
Sintra, Portugal
Located a short distance from Lisbon, this makes a great place for a day trip. Climb to the top of the medieval Castle of the Moors for unhindered views of Lisbon. You’ll find many 19th century Romantic architectural monuments here. Visit royal retreats, castles and estates with elaborate gardens, established when the Portuguese royals would spend their summers in Sintra. Lord Byron once referred to the town as a “glorious Eden”. Highlights include the National Palace of Sintra, Pena Palace, and Quinta da Regaleira.
