Developed by the Swedish in the late 19th century, orienteering can trace its routes back to military training exercises. It’s now a hugely popular activity throughout the world. Its biggest fan base is still Scandinavia. However, the idea of long winter walks in the UK and Northern Europe doesn’t appeal to many hardened orienteers. This is why Spain has become a popular destination for orienteering holidays. First, here is a little bit of info on orienteering. Don’t forget to check these suggestions for other things to do in Spain.

What is Orienteering?

Simply put, orienteering combines racing with navigation using a map and compass. Whilst it traditionally involves cross-country running, other styles have evolved over the years.

An orienteering competition consists of a timed race.  Competitors use a detailed topographic map and compass to navigate through diverse and unfamiliar terrain. Competitors must also visit control points indicated on the map so officials can monitor their routes.

The location of these control points is kept secret until the start of the race. Start times are staggered so competitors are unable to follow others.

What equipment do I need?

To take part in an orienteering race, you will need the following:

  • A thumb or protractor compass.
  • Decent map reading skills.
  • An emergency whistle.
  • A plastic map pouch in case of rain.
  • Comfortable running or hiking shoes.
  • Good quality, lightweight outdoor clothing.

Orienteering Holidays

Now that you know what orienteering is and what equipment you need, where should you do it? There are a number of destinations in Spain that have strong orienteering links. Murcia, Alicante, and Andalucía are the main areas that offer orienteering holidays.  Firms such as Sun-O are a great port of call. These tend to run from the New Year to August. It’s always worth checking with your agent though.

By booking with an established and specialist firm, you’ll have access to maps and regularly checked trails and control points.
