So you want to visit Greece, but not the typical tourist trap of Athens? Thessaloniki, established in 316BC is rich in history. It boasts so much to see and do, even though it might not immediately cross your mind for a city break. Read on for our suggested itinerary for a short break away here.

2 days in Thessaloniki

Once you have arrived and settled into your accommodation, take a walk around the old town to get a feel for this wondrous Greek city. The first place to visit should be the Byzantine Museum. This is the best way to get an insight into the history and culture here before visiting some of the historical sights later on in your visit. You will also see permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions to add to the visit. Head to the impressive Byzantine churches which now feature on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Built over a long period of time between the 4th and 15th centuries there are certainly some gems worth exploring.

After enjoying a delicious Grecian lunch in the town, finish off your day of culture by spending the remainder of the day at the Archaeological museum. Having enjoy some delicious Greek cuisine, end your evening with a visit to an authentic bouzouki club where you can enjoy the traditional form of music.

Your second day in Thessaloniki should be spent visiting the most interesting monuments and sights. Your first stop should be the Roman Baths, followed by a visit to the Rotonda which is the oldest building still in use in the city. Stop by at the State Museum of Contemporary Art after this before heading to The White Tower. This monument is the city symbol and is located on the waterfront. This is a nice place to spend the afternoon and enjoy a stroll along the sea afterwards. If you have some more time, look around the charming shops for a unique souvenir before selecting a nice looking restaurant for your evening meal.

A 3rd day in Thessaloniki

On your third day here, get up nice and early for a visit to the Modiano market; the perfect place to purchase a deliciously fresh breakfast. It has a great vibe and there are also other goods on sale in addition to local fresh food. The remainder of the morning should be spent continuing your dose of culture with a visit to one of the oldest churches in Thessaloniki; Ayia Sofia Church. It is also included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. After this, head off to visit the Ataturk Museum and then spend the remainder of the day exploring Thessaloniki Fortress where you can enjoy great views of the city. End the day with a meal at a traditional Taverna and then dance the night away at one of the many bars.

Day 4 in Thessaloniki

Should you be lucky enough to have a fourth day to spend here and you have happily exhausted the culture vulture in you, arrange a day trip to beaches of Halkidiki. The area is incredibly popular thanks to the beautiful white sandy beaches and can certainly give the Greek Islands a run for their money. Enjoy the sheltered bays, cliffs and coves and completely unwind on the last day of your Grecian getaway.
