As you know, Economy Car Hire is a family run business and we like to think that this is shown in our customer service and friendly manner. We’re not a faceless corporation but a small, close knit team who are dedicated to providing the best car hire experience for your holiday. We therefore thought it might be nice to start a series of blogs that introduce to the team so you know who you’re speaking too next time you get in touch.

We thought it would be nice if the 1st blog introduced you to the big boss himself, Managing Director Rory Sexton and our Operations Manager, Tom Dickinson. Without these 2 you wouldn’t be getting a hire car on your next trip!

Rory & Tom

How often do you go away?

RS: At least 3 times per year. I book a late spring break to look forward to throughout the winter, and then at least a week away in the summer.  We always have a few days at a theme park just before the kids go back to school.

TD: 2 or 3 times a year depending on when I can get away and finances.

What do you need for a perfect holiday?

RS: To be in the company of family and/or friends.  The weather is not important.  Some attractions or facilitates for the kids to get excited about.

TD: The right company! If my girlfriend or friends are there then I’m happy.

Are you active on holiday or do you prefer to laze around?

RS: I prefer to relax, drink wine, read a book, but I don’t like to waste away a holiday without getting out and seeing things.

TD: I need to do both. Ideally I have 3 or 4 days doing nothing but relaxing, followed by 3 or 4 days doing activities or exploring. That way I feel I’ve made the most of my break.

What’s your most adventurous travel experience been?

RS: Moving to San Francisco for work when I was only 19 years old.  I didn’t realise at the time how much of a brave move this was but I have a lot of fond memories of those times.

TD: Quad biking in the Nevada desert. That was amazing and I’d love to do it again.

What was your best holiday ever?

RS: Difficult question.  All of them.  There are great bits about all holidays and they are all equally as good, even the bad ones!

TD: For me it has to be Las Vegas with some friends a while back. It’s an amazing city to visit.

Worst travel experience?

RS: Nearly getting mugged and tricked at various cities (I won’t name them).  You have got to be vigilant at all times no matter where you are.

TD: Getting into a Turkish taxi in Istanbul and giving the simple instruction of ‘Airport please’……like most major cities, it has more than one airport. My driver picked the wrong one. Once arriving at Ataturk airport and realising my flight was from Sabiha Gokcen, the most fast paced taxi journey ensued.

Favourite holiday destination?

RS: Jersey.  It’s a great place, dramatic coastline, nice beaches, and really safe for children.  The island is only 9 miles across at the widest point and has a speed limit of 30 mph.  You can’t get lost.  The people are friendly and it’s not far from home.

TD: So far…Barcelona. But I won’t really know until I’ve visited all of the places I want to.

Favourite cities?

RS: Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, and well San Francisco of course!

TD: Barcelona and Prague – lots of great bars. Oh and some history and nice architecture.

Do you do much research before booking a holiday?

RS: Yes, a lot.  Especially if it’s somewhere that I am unfamiliar with.  It’s best to have a plan of what to do and where to go.

TD: Not really, I like the excitement of ‘winging’ it and experiencing some surprises along the way.

What’s your best piece of travel advice?

RS: Smile and be friendly.  Talk to as many people as you can.  You can find out a lot more from talking to other people than you can out of guidebooks.

TD: Don’t skimp on it! Use every last bit of time and money on the holiday. And make sure you know about the DVLA’s scrapping of the paper counterpart licence!

Where are you off to next?

RS: I haven’t got anywhere planned yet. My wife and I have never had a honeymoon, and we always planned to go to Cape Verde. So, one day we will get there!

TD: I’m off to Cala Bona in Mallorca. Planning on hitting the beach for a well-earned break.
