More than 2,000 participants contributed. Once again, our clarity of pricing and overall rental experience was rated highly by Which? members. View more information about the 2013 and 2014 Which? car hire reports too.

In November 2014, Which? asked its members to complete an online survey. They had to rate their car hire experiences in the last 12 months. 2,747 people responded to this survey. When rating companies, members were asked about the clarity of the final price, the description matching reality and overall satisfaction. When looking at brokers, respondents were asked about the clarity of the final price and overall satisfaction of the supplier that provided the car.

What does this year’s report contain?

This year’s report focusses on the issues of fuel policy and additional insurances.

Fuel policy

The 2015 report states that picking up the car full of fuel and returning it full is usually the cheapest option, followed by returning the car with the same level of fuel.

Top tip: We make it clear when a supplier operates a fair fuel policy. This is marked in green on the quote results page. You can also read the fuel policy for each rental by clicking on the View Rental Conditions link found underneath each vehicle, under the heading Fuel Policy. Alternatively, contact us for further assistance.

Additional insurance

The report also analyses insurance coverage. It explains that whilst most rentals include collision damage waiver, an excess is usually applicable.

Top tip: Our prices always include collision damage waiver with either no insurance excess, or excess reimbursement insurance.

Remember

Damage to the wheels, glass parts and underside of the vehicle are not covered by Collision Damage Waiver (CDW). Which? advise that additional insurance should be purchased before you travel to cover these items.

We offer top-up insurance for £2.50 per rental day. This protects against damage to the uninsured parts of the vehicle. Simply pay the supplier for the damage and claim it back upon your return home.

If you would like to add top-up insurance to an existing booking, simply log into My Account. Click on the reference number of the booking that you wish to add insurance to, then click on the add top-up insurance link.

I am interested in hiring a medium to large car for 8 days beginning 6/12 next Sun until Monday 14/12. Most companies show 25-75 years old limit for insurance. I am 79 years old with lifetime clean driving record (totally accident free) and I have excellent health Am not dependent on any medication. Please could you send me confirmation as to whether you will accept me as a customer.

I always try to book with Economy Car Hire and have done so for a number of years, usually twice a year. I have found their service to be very reliable and on the odd occasion that I have experienced a problem with the hire company at my destination, this problem has been addressed immediately by a member of staff at Economy Car Hire upon my return. I have confidence that they vet the vehicle hire companies as thoroughly as possible and that they respond to feedback from their customers and will not continue to broker for companies unless they improve their standards. I will continue to use Economy Car Hire as long as they offer this excellent level of service.

  • I booked with you because of the Which recommendation. Very disappointed with Green Motions ( car supplier in Athens). They took over an hour to meet us at the airport despite three phone calls. When the driver did arrive he said we had to wait as there may be others arriving. Of course there weren’t. Good news for the family that were 1 day early though, and he didn’t what to take them as he eventually pulled out a schedule list. Apologies at the office were scant. I’m being polite! Of course we were hours late getting to our destination. My worst car hire experience. How hard is it to pick up a customer and get them on their way. It’s a simple task.

      Hi Jacqui,

I’m sorry to hear of your negative experience in Athens. This falls below the standards we expect from the suppliers we work with but would always recommend contacting us immediately if there’s an issue collecting the vehicle. I hope that despite your disappointment and the inconvenience caused, we can still be of service in the future.

      Kind regards,
      Mark
