Found 400 miles off the coast of Africa and regarded as part of Portugal, Madeira is a gem of natural beauty with much to be enjoyed whatever your pleasure. Countryside and Landscapes
The island is of volcanic origin and as such the terrain peaks and troughs thanks to the steep mountainous inclines and the lush green valleys. Much of the island is blanketed in flowers and plants and you will be rewarded with colourful treats in the form of orchids, lilies, hydrangeas and magnolias throughout the year. The highest mountains, Pico Ruivo and Pico Do Arieiro, both tower in excess of 1800 metres high and provide excellent hiking and walking opportunities. Levadas; small man-made irrigation canals, have been transformed into footpaths which criss-cross over the island and allow you to explore areas of the island which are otherwise unreachable.
Cosmopolitan Capital City
The cosmopolitan capital city that is Funchal contrasts brilliantly with the serenity and natural beauty of the rest of the island. Funchal breathes a different puff of life into the island and it ticks all the boxes; delectable restaurants, buzzing nightlife and plenty of eclectic shops, not to mention a range of interesting and historical sights to satisfy the culture vulture in you. There are other gems to be found too including the traditional markets, the palm-tree fringed promenade which parades along the sea front plus a city beach, an international port and much more. Funchal will be sure to satisfy everyone.
Ocean Activities
Madeira is one of the best places you can visit for dolphin and whale watching with plentiful opportunities to embark on boat trips at various locations around the island. Some tours even allow you to swim with the dolphins in the ocean, accompanied by experienced guides of course. This is an ocean activity which propels Madeira onto the must see list. You can also partake in a range of other activities such as sea canoeing and kayaking where you can discover hidden coves and caves along the coastline. Surfing and fishing are also popular. Madeira also boasts some incredible diving spots including underwater caves, shipwrecks and marine nature reserves, all with excellent visibility and mild waters. Although the majority have volcanic black sand, there are of course some great beaches too offering great swimming and snorkelling.
