The Balearic Islands are some of the most popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean. They are home to beautiful beaches and the perfect summer climate. Most holidaymakers don’t need many more reasons to visit the Balearics. However, each island has its own individual allure and character, which is often overlooked.

On the island of Menorca there is so much more to enjoy besides its pretty resorts and sunny weather.

Here at Economy Car Hire we have come up with a few of our favourite beauty spots that will make Menorca memorable!

Beaches

As part of the Balearics, you are more or less guaranteed white sandy beaches and sparkling blue sea. As is often the case though, the tourist hotspots have been commandeered by hotel resorts. The beaches are still pretty but often overcrowded and crammed with sun loungers. This means they can be more of an endurance test than the much coveted relaxing idyll!

Instead of following the crowd venture off-the-beaten track! Visit one of these perfect paradises:

Cala Es Talaier

Cala Es Talaier is a perfect example of the old adage ‘good things come in small packages’. Park at nearby Son Saura and make the 10 minute walk to Cala Es Talaier. The scenery is beautiful and guaranteed to delight you. The beach is blessed with the famous clean white sand and crystal clear water of the Balearic coastline. Located in a small cove, the beach is well secluded with calm and shallow waters. This makes it perfect for swimming. Remember to bring a picnic and plenty of water as there aren’t any refreshments stands here.

Cala en Turqueta

This pristine, unspoilt beach remains just as nature made it. A stretch of soft white sand bordered by shady trees and fringed with the sparkling blue waters of the Med. There is parking available, just a short walk from the beach. As with Cala Talaier, there are no refreshments available so come prepared.

Cala Macarella

Cala Macarella ticks every box. It is an idyllic cove sheltered by pine covered hills and accompanied by a calm pool of turquoise sea. It is the ultimate beach paradise. If you get a bit peckish the Susi restaurant located right on the beach serves a delicious selection of tapas! Cala Macarella is just a 20 minute drive from Ciutadella. There is a free car park just a 15 minute walk from the beach.

All three beaches are easy to reach by car from Ciutadella. From the ring road follow signs for the ‘Platjes’.

Mahon Harbour

Besides its beautiful beaches, Menorca is home to some of the prettiest historic towns in the Balearics. One of which is the island’s capital, Mahon Harbour. Due to its large shape and depth, nations have fought for ownership of Mahon Harbour for centuries. Although it is still a hive of activity, a much more relaxing atmosphere characterises the harbour today. Delight your senses at the twice-weekly market or tantalise your taste buds at a portside restaurant.

For those seeking to unearth some of Mahon’s history, there are a few historical sites that are bound to take your fancy! The Arch de San Roque is the oldest monument still standing in Mahon. It is also the last remaining section of the wall which once protected the town. The Church de Santa Maria which dates back to the 17th century is worth a visit for its monumental organ with over 3000 pipes!

Ciutadella

Ciutadella is a charming city with a distinct Spanish influence. Its picturesque port and an engaging old quarter have earned it the nickname ‘Vella I Bella’, or ‘Old and Beautiful’. With its historic centre and gracious architecture, Ciutadella’s character is quite different from Mahon.

Ciutadella is home to elegant noble palaces and the island’s 13th century Cathedral. It is the best place to go for a taste of Menorca’s history. Wander through the city’s old quarter. This warren of narrow lanes and shaded squares beg to be explored. Enjoy a coffee in a charming pavement café with one of Menorca’s speciality almond pastries. Stunning Medieval, Gothic and Moorish architecture line the streets in the old quarter. However, the Cathedral is by far the most impressive monument.

Looking for a souvenir? Ciutadella is the perfect place to find it. The city is the epicentre for the island’s handmade craft trade. It hosts a delightful market on Friday and Saturday mornings, as well as a night market in the harbour during the summer. Browse the stalls laden with handcrafted jewellery, silverware and ceramics. Take your pick of a Menorcan treasure to take home with you.

Ciutadella is also a foodie’s paradise. Head to the harbour where the restaurants are carved out of the honey coloured cliffs. It is home to everything from chic and sophisticated high-end restaurants to quirky and quaint tapas bars. Wherever you eat in Ciutadella, the food will be delicious. Look out for traditional dishes such as ‘Caldereta de Langosta’. A very tasty stew made with Menorca’s trademark blue spiny lobsters!

Our Top Tip!Don’t miss the Somni Dancing Horses! This show is a spectacular performance of equestrian dance, acrobatics, magic and music. The expert riders dressed in traditional Menorcan costumes guide the horses in impressive routines. They also perform hair raising stunts! The talent is astounding!

The show takes place at Son Martorellet near the resort of Cala Galdana. You can book excursion tickets through most major operators which include dinner and transport.
