Don’t let an unfamiliar car brand sway you away from hiring a rental car! The worldwide automobile industry has a lot of fantastic products that aren’t commonly available in the UK, and renting a car abroad can offer you a whole new driving experience, as well as an added layer of immersion into a country’s expansive culture.

1. DR Automobiles

You might have noticed the cars from DR Automobiles popping up in your search results more often, especially if you’re quoting for destinations such as Spain, Greece or the manufacturer’s country of origin, Italy. Established in 2006, they have been growing in popularity across Europe for their affordability whilst remaining stylish and modern.

2. SsangYong

Mainly known for their SUVs, SsangYong (recently acquired by KG Mobility) is a Korean manufacturer who has established a strong presence in the Eastern Hemisphere. Their durable vehicles are known for being well-suited to both urban and off-road conditions and have earned them a dedicated following across the globe.

3. Geely

In the first quarter of 2024, Chinese manufacturer, Geely, held a 3.5% share of the global market. Their boost in popularity after acquiring Volvo Cars in 2010 means you will most likely see them being offered by car rental providers in Northern Europe.

4. Lynk & Co

This Swedish-Chinese brand comes from a joint venture between Geely and Volvo, combining Swedish engineering with Chinese manufacturing efficiency. With values centered around connectivity and sustainability, you will most likely see them as options in car rental quotes in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

5. BYD

As one of the highest selling car brands in China, BYD’s presence has expanded outside of its home country’s market and into the western markets of North America and Western Europe. BYD (Build Your Dreams) operates with a focus on sustainability and reducing emissions with their range of electric/hybrid vehicles. The manufacturer’s growing popularity means their cars will be appearing in more and more fleets over time.

6. DS Automobiles

If you were to know any of the brands on this list, it would most likely be this one! As a sub-brand of Citroën, their vehicles lean into the sophistication and avant-garde qualities of its French heritage. Keep an eye out for the manufacturer’s most popular models such as the DS 9 and DS 3!

7. JAC

JAC Motors is a Chinese company that specialises in both automobile and commercial vehicles. They have a strong market presence in many regions internationally, these include Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Search for car rental in these regions if you want to experience the reliability and quality that the brand is known for.
