Visit the capital city, Cagliari
The capital is a great place to begin your holiday in Sardinia! Located in the south of the island, the city itself is brimming with history with a medieval centre, a number of churches and a handful of archaeological sites. There is plenty to see and do here and paired with some great restaurants, a local beach and an abundance of wildlife at the salt marshes nearby, there’s something to appeal to all tastes during your time here.
Tour the Wineries
With a profusion of vineyards in the beautiful northern portion of Sardinia, pick up a hire car from Alghero Airport and spend a day visiting some of the many wineries in the area. Try windsurfing, sailing or kite surfing
The beautiful beaches here offer more than just wonderfully clear water and golden sands (as if that isn’t enough); some of the beaches also boast a great selection of water sports! Head to the northern shores for the likes of wind surfing and kite surfing whilst the calm seas elsewhere are perfect for a spot of sailing with the nearby islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Corsica all within easy reach.
Uncover the island’s caves
Neptune’s Grotto is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sardinia and when you visit, you will soon see why! The marine cave can be reached either by boat or road, with both routes offering fantastic scenery, but the 656 steps down into the cave from the road are worth considering! Inside, the impressive stalagmites and stalactites are made all the more spectacular with the dramatic lighting. Other caves to visit include Su Marmuri’s Cave and the Is Zuddas Caves, as well as the Ispinigoli Caves which is home to a 38m high stalagmite, the tallest in Europe!
Go rambling in the Supramonte Mountains
Spanning central eastern Sardinia, the Supramonte massif is yet another area of natural beauty to discover. The highest peak is just short of 5,000ft, while the surrounding lush canyons and foothills are perfect for rambling on a sunny day. Don’t forget to pack your hiking boots!
Go scuba diving at the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo
