With the competition of Alicante and Valencia just up the coast, Murcia is often overlooked. It’s in one of the least touristy of Spain’s corners. Although with 300 days of sunshine and over 200km of beautiful coastline contrasted by the desert-like interior and stunning natural parks, it is somewhat of a mystery as to why. Gradually, the well-kept secret that is Murcia is getting out. Here are 6 super things to do in Murcia…
Cathedral of Santa Maria
Whilst the city of Murcia boasts many impressive buildings, the gothic style Cathedral of Santa Maria is the ultimate of all the city’s architectural feats. Construction commenced in 1394 on the site of a former mosque. It took over 300 years to fully complete as many improvements were made in later years. The cathedral boasts 25 bells and the bell tower, standing at 90 metres high is the tallest in the country affording unbeatable views. This splendid building really should be visited by everyone who comes to Murcia.
El Valle-Carrascoy Regional Park
Although not far from the city, El Valle-Carrascoy Regional Park couldn’t be farther from its busy streets. As such, it is the ideal place for nature lovers. The mountains and greenery are a haven for hiking and cycling with beautiful views aplenty.
Catamaran Cruise
Enjoy a different view of Murcia and the coastline and take a cruise on a Catamaran. Always a winner with visitors, the catamarans depart from the port in nearby Cartagena. Take in the historic forts and Murcia’s other impressive buildings and simply relax for the 1 hour trip.
Terra Natura
Combining a wildlife park and water park on the same site, Terra Natura is one of the most popular attractions in the area. The animal area is divided into continents. It takes on a safari style approach, allowing you to meet a huge host of over 1500 creatures. These include lions, bears, rhinos and elephants without the constraints of bars and cages. Visit this section in the morning before the heat of the day sets in and then cool off in the afternoon at the waterpark.
Golf
This is one of the best areas in the country for golfers. La Manga Golf Club, a resort that has been voted the top golf resort in Europe multiple times is a perfect example. Follow in the footsteps of celebrity golfers and take a swing on one of the three championship golf courses. Each is different, enjoyable yet appropriately challenging and takes in different terrain without sacrificing the tranquillity and beauty that goes hand in hand with a game of golf.
Mar Menor
The biggest string to Murcia’s bow in our opinion is the fabulous Mar Menor. A salty lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by La Manga sandbar makes a fabulous natural swimming pool. Ideal for swimming and sunbaking and of course the variety of water sports on offer. Wallow in the crystal clear, shallow waters, relax on the shore or try your hand at sailing, wind surfing and kayaking or have fun with water skiing and banana boat rides!
Basking in fantastic weather year round, ‘enjoyable’ almost seems too less of a word to describe what your days will be like exploring Murcia and the surrounding area.
Great post, plenty to see in Murcia. Me and my wife love to play golf in La Torre Golf Resort whenever we go on holidays, it’s a pretty amazing place.
