When the weather is sunny, water is the perfect companion. Most of us automatically head to the beach, or indeed choose a resort right on the coast but lake breaks in Europe can hit the spot just as well, if not better. Far less busy and surrounded by incredible natural beauty, a lake holiday can be both totally relaxing and really invigorating with lots of fun to be had, so why not plan a lake break instead this year. Here’s some great inspiration to help you get started.

Lake Annecy, France
Known as Europe’s cleanest lake, Lake Annecy spans 14km in eastern France and boasts fantastic swimming and exciting water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing in a beautiful location. Encircled by many towns and villages such as Annecy itself, Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Talloires there is plenty to explore. It’s perfect for lake breaks in Europe. The area is also fantastic for cycling or even roller skating with a huge cycle path extending along the shore past Sevrier and St Jorioz to Ugine. Your stay will be complimented of course with delicious wine and food and it’s worth noting that the border into Switzerland and the city of Geneva is just 50km away!

As a completely landlocked country, Lake Balaton, affectionately called the Hungarian Sea is a dream come true for those who live in Hungary. It’s also a fantastic holiday destination for everyone else. It is the largest freshwater lake in Europe and there is something for everyone to enjoy. Swim in the water, get the adrenaline pumping with some water sports, go horseback riding along the shores, enjoy a spot of wine tasting, play a round of golf and enjoy the fantastic nightlife at the spattering of resorts amongst plenty more.
Lake Ohrid, Macedonia
Straddling the mountainous border of Albania and Macedonia, Lake Ohrid is a beauty to behold and it is often referred to as Macedonia’s freshwater sea, due quite frankly to its baffling size. The gorgeous blue waters, varied flora and fauna, close proximity to Galichica National Park and all round charm creates a true holiday haven. As one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes it contains a unique ecosystem of worldwide importance and has as such been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
