Fantastic attractions and tempting restaurants abound and although the fabulous beaches are free to enjoy, the costs of a trip to the Algarve can soon add up. That’s why we’ve found 5 cheap things to do in the Algarve that will ensure a great time whilst saving you a few euros!
Portimao Markets
The town of Portimao lies in western Algarve, around an hour’s drive from Faro Airport and proves a very popular place, both as a base for holidays and also as an interesting town to visit. One of its most popular attractions is undoubtedly the large markets here. There are a few which happen on different days of the month; the Gipsy markets take place on the 1st Monday of every month and the Flea markets take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month at the Parque de Feiras e Exposicoes Exhibition area. Wander around and admire the huge selection of goods for sale, from clothes and watches to fishing rods and fruit! The hustle and bustle and colourful atmosphere really make the marks unmissable, even if you don’t plan to buy anything!
Caldas de Monchique
The spa town of Caldas de Monchique makes for another affordable day trip and resides in the Monchique Mountains. The waters here have been famous for their healing properties since Roman times and the beautiful surroundings make it all the more special.
Alvor Boat Trip
As a fishing village built on the estuary of the Alvor River, the water has always been a central focus here and boat trips are a fantastic activity to enjoy the whole year round. The range of choices is endless with something to suit all tastes. Choose from a deep sea fishing trip, a variety of coastal cruise from an all-day wet and wild affair, to a sunset and champagne cruise, or even a nature reserve sightseeing trip up the river estuary, where you can bird watch at your leisure. The prices vary depending on the length of the boat trip you choose, but with a great reputation, no visit to Alvor is complete without heading out on the water.
Alte
The village of Alte is found in inland Algarve, and is often described as one of the area’s most attractive offerings. Filled with quaint stonewashed houses, narrow little streets and it’s easy to see why, but Alte is best known for its springs. The area around Fonte Pequena, which means ‘little spring’, is especially picturesque, with waterfalls and grassy areas for picnics. From here, the famous town of Silves with its impressive castle is just a 20 minute drive away.
Cape St. Vincent
Known as the “Land’s End” of Portugal, Cape St. Vincent is the most south westerly point in the country. Characterised by the stunning coastal cliffs and the large light house, proudly guarding the shores and visible 50 miles away, Cape St. Vincent is particularly impressive. It does become very busy during the summer, but is somewhat desolate during the off season and there are some fantastic windswept beaches to discover. The best time to visit however is late afternoon or early evening, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the sun set from the cliff tops. If you are lucky, you may even be able to climb the lighthouse tower if it is open; there are no published opening times so it vastly comes down to luck!
Pack up a picnic and head out to enjoy some of these wonders of the Algarve without having to worry about the affect it will have on your wallet! What is your favourite cheap day out in the Algarve?
