Found in the southwest of the country, the huge fjord engulfed by the towering mountains is a sight to behold. It is even better appreciated when you tackle the winding mountain roads. The walled Old City of Kotor complete with medieval buildings and architecture is best explored via its narrow alleys and tiny squares. It has made its way onto the UNESCO World Heritage List for good reason.
Places to visit in Montenegro – Sveti Stefan
Just a short drive from Budva is the dazzling, luxury resort of Sveti Stefan. Jutting out slightly into the sea and connected to the mainland by a small isthmus, the island was once a fishing village. It’s now a luxury resort. With the bright red roofs contrasting wonderfully with the brilliant blue sea, the original buildings remain. The interiors have of course been extensively renovated to meet with the luxury classification. This tiny island is very much a must-see.
Budva
An attractive coastal town, Budva boasts lovely beaches. 35 in total. The quaint old city, contained within city walls is lovely. Within you will find a smattering of shops. Sample unique goods and delicious treats from establishments dotted around the quintessential tiny squares. Budva also boasts a great nightlife with plenty of bars and clubs to keep you entertained. As the main tourist hub of Montenegro, Budva can get very busy. Especially when you consider its small size.
Durmitor National Park
Durmitor is one of four national parks in Montenegro. It comprises of the massif of the same name with the highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, standing at 8,274ft. Although there are over 27 peaks in total each reaching over 6,500ft. Other impressive landmarks include the canyons of Tara, Sušica and Draga rivers. They all flow with impossibly clear turquoise water. With historic forests, numerous lakes and breathtaking panoramas, this is undoubtedly one of the best places in Montenegro. Riddled with hiking and walking trails, it’s easy to explore this area of exceptional natural beauty in the north-west of the country.
