With breathtaking scenery, fairytale castles, storybook towns and gorgeous beaches, Eastern Europe offers the perfect list of ingredients for a summer holiday. If you’re planning your own break, you may not have considered this part of the world. Each country has something slightly different to offer so read on and be inspired by our pick of summertime escapes in Eastern Europe.
Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is undoubtedly best known for its capital, Prague; a city which seems to resonate more for stag dos and cheap beer than anything else these days.
Whilst it can’t be denied that this is one aspect of the city, there is plenty more that makes Prague special. Its abundant history and many fascinating buildings, churches and squares which fill the city centre make it one of the most attractive cities in Europe. Why not venture here during the summer and truly see it shine?
From Prague, venture further afield to discover more of the Czech Republic. As a landlocked country, there aren’t any beaches to laze on. Instead there are freshwater lakes to cool off in, UNESCO protected towns complete with magical castles such as that in Český Krumlovto to really send your imagination soaring. Add to that spa towns like Mariánské Lázně with natural springs perfect for that essential holiday rejuvenation and many natural sights from hidden caves to waterfalls and mountains. Bulgaria
With its mountainous landscape and multiple ski resorts offering an affordable alternative to the likes of France, Bulgaria is definitely ever increasing in popularity as a winter holiday destination. It has plenty to offer come summer too. The long coastline bursting with sandy beaches and bustling resorts such as Golden Sands, Nessebar and Sunny Beach make an ideal setting for a summer beach holiday. Bulgaria’s interior glistens with natural parks, historic towns and a heavy dousing of culture.
If you prefer a city break, Varna will be right up your street. It has everything from ancient ruins to modern shopping malls to idle away the time. Bourgas is another fantastic option on the coast. Plovdiv in central Bulgaria is a great option for those who like to combine city life with the pull of the outdoors. Spend days hiking and walking in the countryside. Montenegro
Like Croatia, Montenegro forms part of the Balkans with the sparkling Adriatic Sea found in the west. A summer holiday here would be both unusual but also extremely enjoyable. Particularly if you appreciate exceptional scenery, historic towns and a healthy helping of culture. Enjoying a Mediterranean climate, temperatures can hit between 35-40°c (95-104°f) in the summer. Whilst it may not be a well-known beach destination, it certainly won’t disappoint if you want to embrace some sun, sea and sand during your time here.
Other highlights include the beautiful Bay of Kotor fringed by mountains and the UNESCO listed town of Kotor. Enclosed within its protective city walls, Kotor is a joy to explore with narrow cobbled streets and hidden alleyways, wonderful architecture and quaint cafes.
Budva is a similar example, although it lies a short distance away on the coast. Elsewhere, historic monasteries and churches will enthral you, as well as preserved Venetian palaces plus plenty more. Having discovered the historic delights of Montenegro, you could continue your explorations in the numerous national parks dotted across the country. Lose yourself in ancient untouched forests and scale craggy mountains. Go hiking, walking or biking or try something new such as mountain climbing. It is definitely a destination that you should include on your list, even if you don’t make it there immediately!
