The Julian Alps dominate the northwest corner of Slovenia and are one of the most visited and impressive areas of the country, no matter what time of year you visit. During the winter months when the mercury plummets, these mountains and surrounding areas of the Triglav National Park are blanketed with white powder, rendering it the perfect winter playground. Instead of sticking to skiing or snowboarding, why not have some fun and try some of these alternative activities.

Dog sledding

There are few places that you can enjoy dog sledding and in the few places that this fun filled activity is available, it proves to be very popular. It’s no wonder; dog sledding is an enthralling experience. Husky dogs pull up to four people along on a purpose built sled, allowing you to whip over the snow in no time at all. The power of the huskies and their friendly nature will make you fall in love them from the word go. A dog sledding ride will undoubtedly be one of the most incredible adventures of your life.

Ice climbing

Generally speaking, Slovenia isn’t particularly well known for its ice climbing opportunities amongst winter sports enthusiasts. It’s surprising however because when the temperatures drop during the winter months, the landscape is transformed into an ice climber’s paradise, in particularly the frozen waterfalls of the Julian Alps. Planica Valley conceals 5 major ice falls each year amongst several smaller ones, although there are several other spots all over the island which vary vastly in difficulty. We found this comprehensive guide. Ice climbing is a magnificent, if not adrenaline inspiring, way to conquer the wintery landscape. There are plenty of experienced Ice Climbing guides to accompany you and you can even ascend the ice at twilight for a slightly different experience.

Snow Rafting

Bohinj valley is one of the most worthy spots to mention when it comes to snow rafting, which is essentially the winter version of water rafting or a big kids’ version of sledding down the local hill when it snows! You get to slip and slid down the snowy slopes inside a purpose built 3 person raft and definitely descend at some speed causing squeals of delight that will echo those which escaped you as a child! Snowmobiles return the rafts to the top of the hill meaning most of your time is spent having fun, rather than laboriously pulling the raft to the top of the hill again!

Skiing and snowboarding are great fun but the wintery conditions also present a whole host of alternative activities. Give one of these a try during your holiday in Slovenia for a whole new level of fun.
