The largest of the Balkan States, Romania is growing as a tourist destination for both city breaks during the summer and skiing holidays in the winter. The various resorts nestled amongst the beautiful Carpathian Mountains offer plentiful skiing opportunities, but this country so rich with cultural and natural diversity also has several other winter activities up its sleeve. Head to Romania for your winter holiday and give some of these fun alternatives a try.

Winter Hiking

Hiking is a fantastic and cheap way to get out and see more of the stunning landscapes that Romania can deliver. Hiking during the winter however is a whole different story. Escape the ski resorts and breathe in the mountain air whilst you discover gorges and glacial lakes. Accompanied by a small group you can traverse the snow covered terrain and explore the white peaks and troughs, meet a variety of wildlife and discover hidden caves as well as tiny Romanian villages along the way. Exploring on foot will you give a new insight into this wonderfully varied yet beautiful country. Check out some of these extensive tours, complete with itineraries for some inspiration.

Bobsledding

At the mention of Bobsled (or Bobsleigh), you are probably picturing scenes from the 1993 film, “Cool Runnings”. That’s good, because hopefully you will be thinking how fun it would be to have a go. Well, you’re in luck. The stunning Bucegi Mountains, part of the Carpathian range, consume the majority of central Romania and are one the best spots for winter sports. Sinaia in particular offers a whole host of ski slopes but this is where you will also find a bobsled run so that you can enjoy a different kind of downhill fun! It’s a whopping 1,500m long run with 13 turns and an exciting 132m elevation difference.

Snow shoeing

Snowshoeing is a great, yet physical activity that will allow you to get off the beaten track and explore parts of Romania that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to reach because of deep snow. Snowshoes help you to walk in the snow because they distribute your weight evenly across a larger surface area, making it harder for you to sink! With the company of experienced guides, you can see Transylvania from a whole different perspective on a snowshoeing trek, and perhaps even encounter some up close wildlife experiences.

Winter unleashes a whole different side to Romania that goes much further than skiing or snowboarding. Spice up your winter holiday with some completely different, yet unforgettable experiences!
