Iceland is the ultimate location when it comes to dreaming of a winter holiday. It’s home to several incredible volcanos as well as the infamous blue lagoon, with thermal waters renowned for its healing properties. Not to mention of course, it’s one of the best locations besides the Arctic to witness the Northern Lights phenomenon. Aside from all of this, if you’re looking to avoid skiing for a year, Iceland is the place to come for some awesome alternative winter activities.

Glacier Tour

Glaciers are one of Mother Nature’s most breath-taking sights. From afar they are impressive enough, but actually hiking across a glacier is a completely different ball park and an experience that tops visitors’ lists time and time again. Join an organised tour for a full day hike where you can also try your hand at ice climbing. Not many will have prior experience of this but the guides expect it and will provide all of the necessary equipment for you to try it safely. Ancient ice flows rise and fall with the crevasses that have formed during the glaciers slow movement over the many years, with sink holes and caves waiting to be discovered. It will probably be one of the most tiring days of your life, but oh so worth it.

Snow Kiting in Iceland

Snow kiting is a sport that is limited by location and of course weather and there are few places that practise it. Iceland however is one of them. Essentially, it’s kite boarding on land, but instead of doing it on the beach, you do it on the side of a snow covered mountain, or glacier; both do the job! Exhilarating is probably the best word to describe it! It isn’t an activity you can just do however; like skiing, you will need to take lessons or go on a course. Once you’ve got going, you can slide about all over the slopes and experience them like never before!

Caving

See a side to Iceland that many never even know exists and go on a caving tour in the lava caves and lava tubes beneath the Blue Mountains! The tours run all year round but are extra special during the winter months when the usual stalagmites and stalactites are accompanied by intricately shaped icicles. Once you have overcome the darkness underground, you will be in for some amazing discoveries through whatever means of travel the tunnels dictate; whether it be up right or crawling! It will certainly makes for an individual adventure.

Iceland is the place to go if you are seeking a dose of adventurous winter time activities which will replace your usual skiing holiday. Have you ever been to Iceland and tried any of these activities?
