The Rila Mountains in Bulgaria behold sprawling forests, as well as some of the highest peaks in the Balkan Peninsula. They are transformed into a beautifully dramatic landscape during the winter. Give the expensive ski pass a miss for a day or two. Get set exploring the beautiful snow covered Bulgarian landscape a different way.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is an up and coming activity. This allows you to traverse some areas that would be otherwise inaccessible due to heavy snow. You are probably picturing huge wooden tennis rackets, but rest assured that the equipment has come a long way. They are now light weight yet sturdy, making for perfect snow shoes! Wrap up warm and don’t forget your trekking poles which will help with that all important balance. Trips in the Rila Mountains often include a visit to the 10th century Rila Monastery too. There are several companies which offer multiple day treks; check out the Intrepid Travel for some inspiration.

Ski Mountaineering

Taking skiing in Bulgaria to a whole new level, ski mountaineering is a hefty step up from snowshoeing. A form of ski-trekking, ski mountaineering essentially allows to ascend peaks using your skis as a tool. Once you reach the summit, you get the fun of skiing down varied, exciting and vastly untouched terrain. For this reason, ski mountaineering is best suited to the very well experienced but if that’s you, you may find both the up and journey much more exciting than that at the nearby ski resort. Often treks in the Pirin and Rila mountains in Bulgaria last for several days with stopover nights at various mountain huts or guest houses.

Ski-doo

Ski-doos are a super fun activity for all ages. Usually, these extra powerful jet bikes seat two people and are available for local rent from ski resorts. These beasts will be sure to get the adrenaline pumping whilst you experience the magic of the mountain from a totally different perspective. Usually tourists will be accompanied by a guide on a separate Ski-doo so you don’t get lost and you can even go on a night tour if you want! Embark on a snow mobile adventure during your winter holiday and you won’t regret it!

There are two kinds of people, those who love winter or those who hate it! If you are the former and love a skiing or snowboarding holiday every year but are looking for something a little different to spice up your annual activity holiday, why not try these alternatives during a trip to Bulgaria.
