“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato
Not so long ago, I wrote a post about movies which inspire us to travel. As a keen music fan however, I thought it would be nice to write a post about 10 songs that make us want to travel. Music after all has certain special qualities which influence how we feel and more often than not, one particular song will always resonate with us long after we return from a trip. Whether you are planning a road trip, a family holiday or a break away with your friends somewhere hot and sunny, here are 10 classic songs that make us want to travel and we hope they will make you want to travel too. Sure, the majority of them are oldies, but they’re definitely goodies! Scroll to the end of the post to have a listen…
1. Around the World – Daft Punk
Daft Punk have produced some awesome songs and the same rings true with Around the World. It might have been released in 1997 and contain just one sets of lyrics but the beat more than makes up for it!
2. Fast Car – Tracy Chapman
Fast Car is perhaps not your typical inclusion on such a list, but it’s the meaning of the song which I think makes it deserving of its entry. The lyrics dictate a tale of poverty and making changes, leaving your hometown to make a better life for yourself. May people do this every day and leave job security and their home to travel the world! It’s regarded as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and that’s good enough for me.
3. Road Trippin’ – Red Hot Chilli Peppers
No other song epitomises a road trip like Road Trippin’ from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and that’s why no further explanation is needed! We may of course be biased with our love of road trips however…
4. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
It’s true, Bohemian Rhapsody has absolutely nothing to do with travel or holiday; I will give you that. But, it’s one of the best-selling singles of all time, known the world over and there’s no other song to enjoy an at-the-top-of-your-lungs singing session to whether at home or abroad!
5. Free Bird –Lynyrd Skynyrd
When you go on holiday you are free from the stress and monotony of everyday life and that’s why Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a perfect travel song! There really are too many places we’ve got to see…
6. Little Red Corvette – Prince
A personal favourite of mine is Little Red Corvette by Prince. It always reminds me of my Australian road trip back in 2008, along with the likes of the Beach Boys and T Rex! I certainly wasn’t in a little red corvette, I was in a ropey Ford Falcon Station Wagon (far less glamorous!) but it was a perfect song to accompany the adventure on the open roads of the Australian Outback.
7. Love Train – The O’Jays
With reference to places all over the world including Russia, China, Egypt and Africa, and an unarguably happy beat, Love Train is one of my favourite inclusions on this list! You can’t help but smile and it definitely makes me want to travel.
8. Weekend in LA – The Toasters
Another golden oldie to make the cut comes in the form of Weekend in LA by ska band, the Toasters. The lyrics feature a variety of destination from Tanzania to Tenerife, so this song will be sure to inspire you to travel!
9. Hotel California – Eagles
Another classic comes in the form of Hotel California by the Eagles. The lyrics of course have a darker meaning than the song title suggests, but it’s still a classic song and in this instance, we’ll just leave the thought of a trip to California in your mind!
10. Come Fly with Me – Michael Bublé
This list wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of ‘Come Fly With Me’ and Michael Bublé’s recent cover is as good a version as any. Originally released back in 1958, this is a staple travel song and a great accompaniment to any trip!
So, now have a listen to this ultimate travel playlist and load it up in preparation for your next trip!
