The capital of the Netherlands, this lovely little city has something to offer all ages. This would usually be titled the top 10 things to do, but in a city as varied and interesting as Amsterdam, it’s near on impossible to choose the best things or put them in any order. Amsterdam canalsSo in no particular order, here’s a pick of 10 great things to do that should make their way into your itinerary.

  1. It feels like that are almost more canals than roads in Amsterdam and each of them is beautiful; slicing through the city like the cutting of a delicious cake. Be sure to embark on one of the many canal tours and explore the delights of the city from the vantage of the water.
  2. Attracting around 1 million visitors every year, you will probably find queues at Anne Frank’s House and museum, but don’t let that put you off. Plan your visit for first thing in the morning or the last activity of the day and step back in history in the home of Anne Frank where she along with her family and four other people hid from the Nazis for two years during the Second World War.
  3. Make your way to Vondelpark for the ultimate relaxation spot on a sunny afternoon. It doesn’t really need much more explanation!
  4. A visit to the floating Flower Market will add a burst of welcoming colour to your trip. As a city famous for its flowers, particularly tulips, it’s no surprise that this proves popular among visitors. Amsterdam Street ArtYou might like to buy some bulbs and take some colour home with you, but if not, a stroll around will be enjoyable! Find it on the street between Dam Square and Rembrandtplein.
  5. Spend long exploring the city and you will soon discover the funky and impressive street art that adorns the walls of random buildings. Keep your eyes peeled as the variety of art will definitely bring a smile to your face.
  6. Although my experience of the Van Gogh Museum was a little disappointing, it’s still a must see for visitors. The key I think is to get there early, pretty much as soon as it opens before the crowds have a chance to form. His art is world famous and of course highly impressive, so be sure to plan a visit here, particularly if you have a good few hours to dedicate to it.
  7. Other than Leidesplein, Dam Square is the main hub of the city. It’s here that you will find not only a number of restaurants, coffee shops and bars but a number of attractions and grand architecture. Take in the Royal Palace, the New Church and the National Monument before having some fun at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.
  8. One of the many tasty treats that you should definitely sample is definitely some Dutch pancakes! For breakfast, lunch or a mid-afternoon snack there are hundreds of varieties each as delicious as the next!
  9. Some of the oldest in the world, De Horticus Botanicus or the Botanical Gardens, make for an enjoyable, relatively tourist free place to escape to for a few hours. You will find Amsterdam Zoo and a few museums just a short distance away too.
  10. As soon as you arrive you will learn that the Dutch love to travel by bicycle and the city thoroughly encourages it. Jump on the bandwagon, hire a bicycle yourself and explore the city on two wheels before heading out into the countryside.

What are the top attractions you would add to this list?
